A Spectacular Southern California Cellar

Unquestionably the best cellar we’ve featured all year, this collection is a true treasure trove. Curated throughout the late 1980s and early ’90s and stored in an immaculate home cellar, it was built by an owner with an uncompromising taste for the best. Highlights include every First Growth from the legendary 1982 vintage, the lauded 1983 Palmer, and full cases from one of the world’s rarest producers, Domaine Leroy.

"This wine has proven to be one of Bordeaux's modern day legends. Absolutely spectacular for its first 7-8 years after bottling, the wine has gradually begun to reveal more delineation, structure, and tannin. In 1995, the wine appears even younger than it did 5-6 years ago! It exhibits a thick, opaque garnet color with light amber at the edge. The nose, which was ostentatious earlier in its life, still offers up significant amounts of roasted fruit, coffee, melted chocolate, and decadently rich, sweet black fruits. This is an exotic full-bodied, moderately tannic, massive example of Cheval Blanc noted for its sheer opulence and intensity. However, I find the wine more structured and delineated today than it was a half dozen years ago. It appears ready for a long evolution. I originally felt that the wine would be fully mature by 1993, but it now appears to require another 4-5 years to hit its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for 20+ years . The only question millionaire collectors should ask about the 1982, is whether the 1990 will rival it? Both are awesome wines! Tasted 23 times since bottling with consistent notes." (12/1995)

100 Points William Kelley - Wine Advocate

"A spectacular wine that only goes from strength to strength, and which ranks among the pinnacles of my birth year vintage, the 1989 Haut-Brion wafts from the glass with a rich bouquet of blackberries, blackcurrants, cigar wrapper, loamy soil, black truffle, burning embers and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's sumptuous and dramatic, with huge reserves of fruit that are complemented by carnal, savory nuances and framed by melting tannins and ripe acids. Concluding with a long, resonant finish, the only criticism one can make is that a 750-milliliter bottle simply isn't enough." (02/2022)

"One of the three or four very greatest wines of the vintage, the 1982 Latour delivers aromas of dark berry fruit, rich cigar wrapper, loamy soil, walnuts and smoke. Full-bodied, broad and layered, it's deep, seamless and immensely concentrated, its fleshy core framed by sweet, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, expansive finish. A monument to the greatness of Bordeaux, it is one wine that's worthy of all the praise that has been lavished on it over the years.” (12/2022)

98 points Neal Martin – Wine Advocate

"Tasted at the Château Palmer vertical in London, this was the finest 1983 Château Palmer that I have encountered. The nose is ethereal with wonderful definition: mint-tinged red berry fruit, cedar, dried rose petals and very subtle acrid tang of a November bonfire. It is the definition and purity that is beguiling and yes, it is reminiscent of the 1961. The palate is beautifully balanced and lithe in the mouth. Like previous bottles, there is a Burgundy-like sensibility about this Palmer, sensual in the mouth with a crystalline finish that will have you reaching for the glass for another sip. Robert Parker stated that the 1983 was the best vintage following the epochal 1961 and I completely concur. This 1983 Palmer is probably at its peak now, although I have no doubt that it will continue to cruise at high altitude for many years.” (05/2015)

" The 1997 Vosne-Romanee Beaux Monts exhibits red fruits, roses, and candied orange wines in its profound aromas. This tannic, backward, and hyper-concentrated wine is powerful and intense, yet elegant and precise. If this wine can cope with its very present tannins, it will prove to be stunning." (10/1999)
